Welcome to the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. I am pleased that you are visiting us today. Please feel free to browse our site and see our excellent offerings in Chemistry and Biochemistry for undergraduates and Chemistry for graduate students. For all students, we offer a unique blend of state-of the-art teaching and research in the Chemical sciences with Seton Hall's rich educational and Catholic tradition and with the tremendous opportunities for scientists in the tri-state area.
For undergraduates, we offer majors in Chemistry (ACS Certified and non-ACS Certified), Biochemistry and Chemical engineering (joint with NJIT). For premedical students, we work closely with several departments, including Biology, Mathematics and Physics. Our unique blend of a PhD-granting research department with a small undergraduate department allows a very strong research orientation for all of our majors, with undergraduate research beginning in the Freshman year and continuing throughout our program.
For graduate students, we offer the PhD plus four MS options: with thesis, without thesis, with a minor in business administration and leading to PhD candidacy. Our graduate programs are unique in that they can all be completed on a part-time basis, with classes and seminars at night or on weekends, to serve the needs of busy working professionals. For full-time graduate students, who are usually supported as teaching assistants, this allows formation of close contacts with working industrial scientists, often leading to employment opportunities. Up to four graduate courses may be taken on a non-matriculated basis, with greatly simplified paperwork.
Our eleven faculty are conducting state-of-the-art research in diverse areas such as gas and liquid chromatography, surface science, computational chemistry, biophysical chemistry, carbohydrate synthesis and catalysis. We offer a broad range of research choices and most groups participate in interdisciplinary research within the department and with collaborators in other departments and institutions.
Again, I welcome you to the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. We stand ready to assist you in your beginnings of study as an undergraduate or graduate student, or in your professional growth as a working scientist.
