On May 28, 2008, Wyatt R. Murphy, Jr. was presented with the Sr. Marian Jose Smith Excellence in Education Award from the North Jersey Section of the American Chemical Society.
The award recognizes Murphy’s inspiring dedication to mentoring students in chemistry. In particular, previous students noted his influence in helping them decide to major in chemistry and to continue to further their career in this field. In addition, he also “invented” the CHEM 1108 Principle of Chemistry II research experience program that gives chemistry and biochemistry majors the opportunity to perform an authentic research project in a laboratory of a faculty member during their freshman year. The program has proven to be successful because it engages freshman students in research very early on in their education.
Sr. Marian Jose Smith Excellence in Education Award honors a professor from a degree granting institution in the North Jersey Section of the American Chemical Society for inspiring students and launching them on successful careers in chemistry as manifested by their accomplishments. Awardees are nominated biennially by their former students. Established in 1993, this award is funded by Hoffmann LaRoche. The nomination was made by former Seton Hall student Shana O. Kelley, Ph.D., who is now a full professor at the University of Toronto in Canada.
Professor Murphy received his Ph.D. at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is a long standing member of the Clare Booth Luce Scholarship committee and has played an important role in establishing scholarship awards for sophomore and junior science students
